Jewelry Cleaning At Home
Cleaning your Jewelry is important
Underwood’s jewelry is made to last a lifetime, but proper care and cleaning is essential to keep it looking beautiful all the time. Everyday tasks such as cleaning, kitchen work, and even applying lotion or hairspray can dirty up jewelry quickly. Cleaning jewelry regularly will keep it shiny and reduce the amount of buildup from everyday wear. Germs can get buried deep inside your jewelry and without proper cleaning, can cause bacterial infections.
Keep in mind that different metals and stones require different types of cleaning so make sure you’re using the best method possible for your jewelry. You can always use commercial jewelry cleaners, like our Underwood’s branded cleaner, or you can try out some at-home methods. It’s also best to use a jewelry polishing cloth because the fibers in paper towels and other cloths can cause small scratches on the surface of your jewelry.

Diamonds
You can clean your diamonds everyday and it will not hurt them. Diamonds are highly attracted to oils and grease so the slightest touch with your finger will leave a visible finger print mark. Mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with hot water. Dip a medium-bristle toothbrush into solution. Gently brush the top and bottom of your diamonds. Rinse with warm running water. Gently dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
Gold
You will not need to clean gold very often, but when you’d like your jewelry to look a little brighter, mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with warm water. Soak jewelry in the solution for 30 minutes. Scrub jewelry with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse gold with warm running water. Dry with a soft lint-free cloth. – Putting your gold in boiling water is NOT recommended.

Silver
Silver is notorious for oxidation and discoloration over time, especially when stored in an air-tight place. Mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with warm water. Dip a soft cloth in the solution. Gently rub the cloth over the jewelry. Rinse with cool water. Gently dry with a soft lint-free cloth. -You can also use a polishing cloth for quick results.
Pearls
Cleaning Pearls at home can be tricky! You must be careful getting water on the silk, as it can become stiff and eventually break. Pearls are the last thing on when you’re getting ready in the morning. Make sure you put your perfume and lotion on before your pearls. They should also be the first thing you take off when getting ready for bed. Use a soft polishing cloth and gently massage your pearl strand to wipe clean.

Colored gemstones
Each colored gemstone is unique and cleaning them is no different. Each gem has it’s own special cleaning guide simply because the hardness of the stone will determine how you clean it. Here is the perfect guide to use for all your gem cleaning needs.
Pro Tip- Be careful with thermal shock on certain gemstones such as Emerald and other gems. Going from hot to cold will potentially make your stone crack.
