Emerald Green
May’s Birthstone & The Gemstone for the 20th & 35th Anniversary
History & Symbolism
Derived from the Sanskrit word “marakata” meaning “the green of growing things.”
Philosophers have believed that the Emerald represents fertility and rebirth for thousands of years. It is also closely associated with having an open heart and being in tune with the vibration of abundance and love.
One of the oldest Emerald mines was rediscovered a century ago in Northern Egypt. This aligns with the evidence that it was one of Cleopatra’s favorite gemstones. Other famous legends known for owning prize-worthy Emeralds are Alexander the Great, Charlemagne, Henry II, and Queen Elizabeth II.
Emeralds are more unique than other gemstones because of their heavily included nature. Most contain mineral inclusions and fractures, referred to as “Jardin,” which ironically means garden. Emeralds with high clarity grades are extremely rare and valuable. So much to say that fine quality Emeralds can have a similar value to diamonds of the same carat weight.
On the Mohs hardness scale, Emerald ranks 7.5-8, meaning it is an appropriate gemstone to wear in everyday rings.
