Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is right around the corner! Underwood's is the perfect place to find special gifts for the moms in your life.

Mother's Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, but celebrations of motherhood have been observed for thousands of years. The earliest known motherhood celebrations were the festivals held by ancient Greeks and Romans to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. The early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday” is the clearest precursor to our modern Mother's Day celebration.

In the United States, Mother's Day evolved from several designated gatherings. The first were “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs,” started by Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia to teach mothers how to care for their children prior to the Civil War. After the war, Jarvis began “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” a day for mothers to meet with former Union and Confederate soldiers to foster reconciliation. In 1870, abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” which called for mothers to unite to promote world peace; she then campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated on June 2nd. After Ann Reeves Jarvis passed away in 1905, her daughter, Anna, began Mother’s Day celebrations in West Virginia with the idea of showing appreciation for the sacrifices mothers make for their children. We continue to show our appreciation for the mothers in our lives on the second Sunday of May each year.
