Carat Award
This beautiful Tsavorite Garnet pendant/enhancer won First
Place in the Carat Award competition for excellence
of design and construction. Tsavorite garnet is a rare
variety of garnet that occurs in an intense green color
(rather than the typical burgandy color of garnet) and
is extremely rare in this size and quality. The 18K gold
and platinum mounting was created in Underwood's shop
by a new technique called "laser welding" where
all of the pieces are joined with a special laser machine,
the first such machine in Arkansas.

Smithsonian Institute Bracelet
In 1979, the Smithsonian Institute, wanting to create a
collection of fine jewelry to be displayed at the Smithsonian
as "America's Crown Jewels," started interviewing
jewelers who could craft each piece by hand. Only 31 custom
jewelers from across the U.S., representing the highest
level of America's jewelry arts, would be chosen to create
the 33 pieces. Underwood's in Fayetteville was one of
those chosen.
William G. Underwood, founder of Underwood's,
personally made this bracelet by hand from special alloys
of 18K white and 18K green gold. The bracelet was complex
to make because the "slot" of each white gold
screw head is actually an intense blue sapphire from
the famous Yogo sapphire mine in Montana and each sapphire
was friction fitted into the grooved slot. Additionally,
the catch is completely hidden in the carved and invisible
recess of the I.D. Panel. It is released by pressing
down on the jeweled screw head.
